Fun Chemistry: The Science of Colors, Bubbles, and Reactions
Chemistry is all around us! It is the science that studies how substances interact, change, and create new materials. From the air we breathe, to the food we eat, and even the soap we use—chemistry is part of everyday life.
In this station, visitors will see how simple and safe experiments can show the magic of chemical reactions. A chemical reaction happens when two or more substances mix and change into something new—often producing bubbles, colors, heat, or light.
Activity 1: The Color-Changing Chemistry
-
Scientific idea: Some liquids can act as indicators. They change color when mixed with acids or bases.
-
Materials: Red cabbage juice (as a natural indicator), vinegar (acid), baking soda solution (base).
-
Steps:
-
Pour cabbage juice into three clear cups.
-
Add vinegar to the first cup → turns pink/red.
-
Add baking soda solution to the second → turns blue/green.
-
Leave one as it is for comparison.
-
-
Result: Visitors see how chemistry can make colors appear like magic.
Activity 2: The Foamy Volcano
-
Scientific idea: When an acid (vinegar) reacts with a base (baking soda), it produces carbon dioxide gas.
-
Materials: Baking soda, vinegar, dish soap, red/orange food coloring, a plastic bottle or model volcano.
-
Steps:
-
Put 2 spoons of baking soda in the bottle.
-
Add a few drops of dish soap and food coloring.
-
Pour vinegar quickly inside.
-
-
Result: A foamy eruption flows out, like a volcano—safe and fun!
Activity 3: Dancing Raisins
-
Scientific idea: Gas bubbles attach to objects, making them float. When bubbles pop, the objects sink again.
-
Materials: Clear cup, soda water, a few raisins.
-
Steps:
-
Fill the cup with soda water.
-
Drop raisins inside.
-
Watch them move up and down like they’re dancing.
-
-
Result: A simple way to see gas bubbles in action.
